091 DETAIL FROM 'PUSSY WILLOW'
By George Dunlop Leslie (1835-1921)

The Pussy Willow twig is one of the most entrancing new signs of life in early Spring to behold. These soft velvet-like buds (Salix Discolour) just ask to be stroked as though they might purr in response. Who can refuse?

Here it is possible that an analogy is being drawn between the softness of the buds and the sitter who is barely 20 months old. For she is surely in awe of the Pussy Willow. Though painted probably a century ago, this beautiful little girl is just as appealing to us as if it was today. This 'Age of Innocence' is best described as magical to every adult - particularly mothers - who sense the treasured moments as the nearest to a heavenly time in their relationship. A tiny child responds in a way that evokes the true values in an ideal life.

Why? Oh! Why, we all ask ourselves, can't these moments last forever? Well, Sir Joshua Reynlolds captured this moment forever in his famous painting. And so here also has Leslie without a doubt.... Forever!

This momentary observation of awe comes from the first awareness of everything surrounding our little girl, in particular this pussy willow twig . She will surely move our hearts and set us all the example of just how wonderful the adventure of life can be.
